Free Comic Book Day (tm)!

Oh, dear. Now that we've all cracked the internet in half with our last discussion, we need to heal it again.

So ...

How did YOU celebrate Free Comic Book Day today (if you did)? And, if you were running your comic book store, what would you do to celebrate (in a cost effective way)?

I am in the UK on a business trip and was pleased and suprised to find the comic stores in Nottingham were celebrating Free Comics day today. I was expecting nothing and got some great comics, you can't ask for a better day at the comic shop then that. The US stores I go to all had signs up well in advance the UK ones had nothing so it was a really nice suprise when I went out to lunch today.

I was surprised to find myself talking to a fella, name of George Perez. I didn't know the store I visited was having guests, but go figure. I snagged some autographs from him and Phil Noto, who also happened to be there.

The store is a great comics joint north of Orlando. Fun times.

I took my son to Lee's Comics in Mountain View, picked up a free Star Wars comic for him and a few Pokemon packs!

Oh, and I picked up Showcase Presents Metamorpho.

I got tons of the free books, the free Jack O'Neill action figure, a Batman T-Shirt (grey with black bat and no oval) and Showcase Green Lantern! My local store also had a TV set up playing non-stop Batman:TAS. It was a rocking good time.

I used it as an excuse to travel around Austin visting comic shops. I pickedup a neat sketch from an artist and 1st series Flash 123. Kinda of wierd to go in to get free comics and end up with a key silver age comic book.

Stopped by Dr. No's Games & Comics in Marietta, GA. Went with the wife and 3-year-old... she wanted to snag some comics to use as examples in a creative writing class she's teaching this summer, where one of the assignments is to create a 10-page comic book.

I was surprised to find a creator there doing sketches, Mark Bagley who pencils Ultimate Spider-Man. I took my kid over to him and said "You see this man? He draws Spider-Man comics!" My kid got all wide-eyed and went "COOL!" and Bagley and everyone in line cracked up. The my kid proceeds to stand next to Bagley and say that he was going the "help him color".

Bagley was very cool and gave my kid a personalized print of Spider-Man, and my kid was happy.

So a good FCBD for my family and me!

Sadly, I had kind of forgotten about Free Comic Book Day when I entered the store, what with my desire to get Crisis this and Civil War that and catch up on over a month's worth of stuff. Fortunately, I almost literally bumped into the table with free comics, so I snagged me some Owly, Donald Duck, X-Men/Runaways, and that Top 100 Graphic Novel issue of Wizard.

Sadly, I couldn't celebrate it the way I did the first two years of FCBD, with a Batman cape and mask, a Hard-Rock Cafe t-shirt, light brown shorts, and an eye out for justice. Oh, and my sister/sidekick is in another state.

I brought my neighbour's kid to two comic shops. I bought him a Gorilla Gorilla comic (hey it had a gorilla fighting a dragon or fire-breathing T-Rex with wings) at one and a "good" Spider-man action figure at the next. We also made off like bandits with a dozen or so free books. I also had the following conversation about Wolverine's power.

Me: He can smell like a dog and um hear like a cat. Plus he's Canadian.

Kid: Like a Canada Goose?!

Me: Exactly like a Canada Goose.

I live in central america, so the only comic book shop celebrating FCBD in my country was a music store with some comics in the back. I got there just before the shop opened and there was already 30 people in a row in front of store. once I got there, I got four free comics and bought a couple more. I spend the rest of the day reading, so it was a good day.
