GOOD NEWS, KIDS!

 Good news from The Shield!

Gosh, yes! Because what could kids like more than an entire book devoted to someone whose goal is to hang people.

Unusual? I'll say!  And what a perfect stocking stuffer for Jonnie and Janey.

Well, why wouldn't you want your legally undefined protégé off under the tutelage of someone named "The Hangman"?

The Boy Buddies.  No fooling.

Because nothing says "Merry Christmas" like The Hangman.

If we call them Feminine G-Men, will J. Edgar Hoover be upset?

Depending on your reaction,
he may even pay you a visit.

In the days before letter columns became the normal way to burn the required pages to get cheaper postage (and even then, due to editorial discretion), I'm often left wondering how much "popular demand" was from actual input and how much was pre-scripted in a conference room six months earlier to fit the book that someone had already decided was going on the schedule.

Like modern streaming services renewing or killing a show based on "internal metrics" that we're not allowed to see, "the response was so great" could plausibly mean that MLJ's offices were legitimately swamped with letters from children demanding the right to spend their dimes on a crudely-drawn ultra-violent vigilante who decided to romance his dead brother's girlfriend. But it could also mean that they were going to print it no matter what, and this is warning readers to make sure they get their copies before the imaginary locust swarm of Hangman fans denuded the local newsstands.

Now, if you'll excuse me, there's a man in a green leotard at my door who would like to talk to me about a spelling game of some sort, I think...

Why would Hoover object to feminine G-Men? Even if they weren't his size, he might get some lovely ideas for frocks.

Okay, that made me laugh.

One thing you can say about the Hangman: He's probably not as boring as the Shield. YMMV of course.

Oh, I think that just means you've never read a Hangman story.

That is in fact the case but it sounds like his stories are more "outrageous" than the Shield's and therefore subjectively less boring. I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that Hangman stories tend to have worse scripts and art than Shield stories but being bad stories don't necessarily mean that they're BORING stories. That's really all I ask in this context. :-)

Hangman stories are generally ugly, unreadable, un-amusing messes, which I why I never cover them.
