Things That Made Me Happy...

in my comics this week.

The new house ads for the Flash. Heh. Heh heh.

Hey! Tom Kamalku really is an Eskimo! We need more good artists like Daniel Acuna, folks.

Hal Jordan frenching a Zamaron in the midst of battle. I make fun of Hal alot, but as I've said before, his unpredictability and lateral thinking really do make him the best.

In solving his immediate problem with a kiss, Hal creates a much larger -- like, universe-threatening -- problem. Ladies and gentlemen; Hal Jordan!

So, Donna isn't calling Hippolyta "mother"? Interesting...

Leonidas the Wonder Lion. He needs to become permanent member of the Wonder Woman cast.

What -- no female lions on Themyscira?

Crazed obsessed scientists doing dangerous experiments in downtown Metropolis that go horribly wrong, turning them into power-drunk supervillains. Kurt Busiek knows what makes Metropolis interesting.

Superman snarking off to reporter Lois Lane, then trying to mollify it lamely. Plus, Kurt Busiek knows what makes Clark Kent an interesting person and a good reporter.

Brainy invents a timeviewer. Well, of course, he does! I love the Legion.

Chamelon and Invisible Kid calling Brainy on his BS.

Proof that the Supermullet was in a different universe.

The Brainiac family reunion.

The return of the fabulous Sensor Girl!

Liberty Belle, like any newlywed, tries to fix up her friends with blind dates. And, like Jesse, I love the idea of Wonder Woman going out with Mister America, whoever he is now.

Oh, for those who didn't buy the Superman Family Showcase... Jimmy Olsen once gained the power of superspeed in "Jimmy Olsen, Speed Demon" (Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen 15, September 1956). Just so you know.

Lightray dying. I just hate the New Gods.

Superman's pal, Jaime Reyes. You deserve to be reading Blue Beetle, you know.

Adam Beechen on Titans is a wonderful gust of fresh air. Thanks to his writing, I even enjoyed the teen angsty parts. And he does a GREAT job with Nightwing & Robin and Troia & Wonder Girl.

May I suggest "I think, when you do it from orbit, it's called 'brooding.'"

Why don't you like the New Gods?

yes, yay Sensor Girl, but I couldn't help but be annoyed that Superman knew her. The "cool, it's the Levitz Legion!" reaction keeps getting interrupted by the hiccups-- the Levitz Legion got cut off from their Superboy by the first Crisis, just like the New Earth Clark got cut off from the Legion by the first Crisis, but Sensor Girl by that name didn't debut until after that had happened.

Interesting. I hadn't known that. Right before the Silver-Age Flash debuted. I wonder if DC was using the then-wildly popular Jimmy Olsen to re-introduce youngsters to the concept of super-speed? I know Jay Garrick had last been seen just five years before, but back then the average comic book audience turned over at about that rate.

Yeah, and didn't Jeckie become Sensor Girl after Karate Kid was killed by Nemesis Kid? So how are they both here at the same time?

Must be yet another alternate timeline dealie. Though I'm enjoying the heck out of the story.

Was going to email you, but can't find an addy on your site. Hokay. Anyway, WizKids is having a 'create a card' context -- see details here . They're looking for original feats, battlefield conditions, and object tokens... I'm thinking your T-speres or power batteries could do well. Remember me when you're rich. ;)

So... When is the Star Boy/Deadpool crossover happening?

I still don't get why the kid had to be the Blue Beetle. He's a fine character and the book is okay but he'd be the same fine character with an okay book if he was the Beige Butterfly... and then we could have the Blue Beetle free to follow more of the pattern set by previous Blue Beetles...

Hating the New Gods? It's Kirby's masterwork. Hell, it's Walt Simonson's masterwork! (Yes, Orion is even better than Thor.)

Oh Hal. He gets to be chased by not one, but TWO gorgeous women, he snogs a Zamoran, and then they all go out for beer afterwards! No wonder he looks like he's having the time of his life.

And Jaime is SUCH a good boy. I'm pretty sure that he can keep up with Superman, just fine.

What makes you say Tom Kalmaku looks like an Eskimo? He wasn't wearing a parka, carrying a harpoon, or chewing on whale blubber.

What they really need to do is give him a code name like "Eskimo", and he can explain his talent for repairing airplanes thusly: "I just pretend the plane's a whale and my wrench is a harpoon."

(Sorry, I'm still bitter and baffled that DC has a character named "Gypsy", whose skills are theft and deceit. Why not be as offensive to as many minorities as possible? They could have a team consisting of "Gypsy", "Eskimo", "Irish-Man", and maybe "Jew".)

Books I'd love to see:
Deadpool & Starman
"Jew"

My favorite quote came after Geo-Force's snarky "That is not only ridiculous, Superman, it is insane."

Batman says "You were kids".

Superman replies "No. We were Legion."

Damn straight, Supes.

I'm only marginally aware of the existence of football, but doesn't the NFL actually have a licensed team called the Redskins???

Correct my if I'm wrong but didn't Jimmy have just about every power possible at some point. That idiot will drink any potion given to him by anybody and *POOF* he's got powers for 6 pages.

And yet, Superman still had to bail him out of trouble on a regular basis. If Metropolis were an island, he'd be Gilligan.

In that case, wouldn't he kill the plane?

And if we're doing The Stereotypes as a super team, I'll be "Latino", the dark-eyed ladies man/rumba dancer of the gang. Although I'm nothing like that, even if I am Hispanic.

My gut reaction was to be totally excited that they used Sensor Girl as she's one of my favourite characters in a comic book *ever*, but once I thought about it I kind of realised she would probably suck because with Karate Kid around she was likely to just be the whiny not-at-all-aloof-and-mysterious Princess Projectra. Granted, she hasn't done much yet, but she does kind of look like she's more Jecky than Sensor Girl. Which bugs me, cause Projectra was always one of my LEAST favourite characters ever. Meh.

Also wasn't happy about Dream Girl being the one to run up and hug Timber Wolf when the team first saw him, as it was pretty much established once the Legion started getting their own characterisations that the two of them never really cared for one another that much.

To balance out all the negativity though, I do like Star Boy's schizophrenia, and how obviously easily treated it is in the Legion's future.

And while I kind of rolled my eyes at Dawny having a female lover (funny how it's only ever the hot CHICKS that are allowed to be revealed as bi/gay in comics...wonder how much more reaction something like that would have if it were Ultra Boy?), I will be okay with it if it's treated with the same kind of maturity that sexuality was in the 5 Years Later Legion..
