Things That Made Me Happy

in this week's comics.

  • Wait... a... a scar on Hal Jordan's head? A scar on... Hal Jordan's head? BWAHAHAHAHA!
  • I'm pretty sure I've never actually seen someone die by banana peel before.
  • Okay, I don't pretend to have any idea why Mongul seems to have a detachable while still operable arm; but it is funny.
  • "I didn't even realize I had an arch-enemy."
  • Luthor and Brainiac are still the best team of villains ever; particularly when they aren't really working together.
  • Two-Face was just everywhere this week. And sounding intelligent, like a successful criminal, not like someone who'd have trouble crossing the street. Bully.
  • Have I mentioned how wonderful I think it is that the Book of Oa is written in Interlac?
  • Finally, a psychologist who says, "No; no, don't bother."
  • Two comics with Two-Face and a pizza delivery guy. It's a strange world.
  • Captain Action was about 90 times better than it had any right to be; Fabien Nicienza strikes again. Bully for you, Moonstone. I think I need to start reading more Moonstone.
  • So, who taught Batman how to make his nipples look like his eyes? I'm betting it was the Phantom Stranger.
  • XXX...! XXX...! XXX...!
  • He becomes a folk hero for robbing banks? Diamondrock's right, the Marvel Universe is full of idiots.
  • "Doctor Wing"; heh, nice one.
  • When did the Lone Ranger become a Vertigo book? You deserve to read the Lone Ranger.
  • The Creature Commandos? Ultraa the Multi-Alien? Action is officially insane. In the best possible way.
  • Okay, I don't think they make a Twelve-Step program for that.
  • Nightwing's secret is being rather strongly hinted at, isn't it? Too strongly...?
  • I always thought Valhalla Cemetery was a dumb idea.
  • Booster didn't notice the modern art, but I spotted it right away; did you?
  • The Blank. Spider-Man's rogue's gallery is having quiet a renaissance, isn't it?
  • My gods, I have the hots for naked Brainiac....
  • Do I actually... miss Judd Winick on GA/BC? Who I am, and what have I done with Scipio Garling?
  • "I am the god of progress."
  • NOT the midwife you want helping you. Really.
  • The difference between Brainiac and Luthor, succinctly explained.
  • "You meant bow and arrows, didn't you?" ROTFL!

Okay, you're going to have to help me out here, my friend. Clearly this "folk hero" is in a Marvel book. Seeing as I don't tend to read Marvel much, you're going to have to point me in the right direction to see exactly what is proof of my being right.

Because that doesn't happen all that often...

I strongly approved of the statement of the Luthor-Brainiac difference.

"hey are you Static's father?"

Where can i find the twelve step program?

You know I've been hanging out on these comics blogs for too long when my first reaction to Detective #851 is, "boy, Scipio will really like Two-Face in this issue".

I fancied Brainiac a month or two back - and this week was rather attracted to Amazo when I got round to reading a Trinity issue (bare chest, man-corset . . .). Eek, is there a support group?

Yeah, you're right, that could never happen in the real...excuse me, Billy Joel's "The Ballad of Billy the Kid" just started on the radio. I love that song.

What DC fanboys often forget is that the Marvel Universe is supposed to be at least a bit grounded on our reality - so, seeing as the people in the USA are stupid (and before anyone argues - you elected Bush twice, and millions voted for McCain/Palin, meaning they are completely ok with the previous 8 years of Bush in the white house) - it's only logical that the people in the MU would be as stupid as their real counterparts.

Apropos of nothing in the above post, but just in case you didn't know: I was at Target this morning and saw a new exclusive 6-pack of Justice League Unlimited action figures, including Crimson Fox, Deadman, Commander Steel, B'wana Beast...and VIBE.

Someone at Mattel must be thinking of you.

Someone at Mattel must be thinking of you.

Between Killer Moth being in the new DC Universe line of figures and this, I think Scipio must have something blackmailable on the Mattel CEO!!

The whole "oh, you meant ARROWS" comment by Mia was my favorite part of that book. But there were PLENTY of other thing to be happy about.

Personally I enjoyed all of those Green Lanterns and their fabulous behinds falling into the time singularity. It was as though they drew it just FOR ME!

And yes, the Brainiac/Luthor interaction has been a hoot.

I don't know, Scipio. I think Booster may have noticed the art. Maybe that's why he suddenly started talking about action figures and trying to sound like a shyster.

Oh, and Soneca? Just because a person voted for George Bush Jr. doesn't mean that "they are completely ok with the previous 8 years of Bush in the white house" and having voted for McCain doesn't by any means imply that either. I didn't vote for McCain but, frankly, to call somebody stupid because they voted for who they chose and not who YOU would choose is rude and ignorant. I wonder what enlightened nation you come from yourself to put down Americans...

Citizen Scribbler's comment is right. Having followed Scipio's site almost religiously for a couple of years now, I'm fairly certian that he and I would fall on different ends of the political spectrum. But I deeply appreciate the fact that he has the class not to harangue people who have different political views like some other comics bloggers tend to do. IMO, Soneca's gratuitous name-calling is uncalled for, especially on this website. I think he may be the one who is estúpido.

Not that anyone here seems to care, but a few things have also happened over in the Marvel Universe during the last couple of weeks: Earth defeated the Skrull invasion; SHIELD has been disbanded; Norman Osborn is now the leader of the 50-State Initiative and the official Avengers team; Tony Stark is a fugitive from justice; Mockingbird is back the dead; Norman Osborn has a secret alliance with Loki, the White Queen, the Hood, Namor, and Dr. Doom; Luke Cage's baby was kidnapped by Jarvis the Skrull; Dr. Doom and Namor are already planning to take down Norman Osborn; the ever whacked-out Scarlet Witch is coming back; Norman Osborn killed the Swordsman. . .but other than that, no, nothing of any importance ever happens at Marvel.

Certainly nothing to compare to the awe and majesty, oh, wait, make that the awesome mess of Final Crisis #5.

(And anti-kudos to whoever thought modeling the new Darkseid look on Marvel's Apocalypse was an improvement on the original; but then, what the hell did Jack Kirby know about graphics design?)

And I officially dropped Justice League of America from my buying list; and Batman and the Outsiders is going on the hit list next week if the book doesn't start being about the Outsiders again.

Steve, I don't recall anyone saying that nothing of any importance even happens at Marvel. Nor do I, at least, mention Final Crisis at all, except for one part I found funny.

I don't presume to detail What Was Important In Comics; just Things That Made Me Happy. Most of those aren't important at all!

For the record: Dark Reign was interesting, wasn't it?

Steve, thanks for trying to steer the conversation back onto comics!

For what it's worth, I found "Dark Reign" to be way more interesting than anything in "Secret Invasion". Answering the question "What if evil won?" the Marvel way.

It made me happy that gold kryptonite has been reconceived in a way that will allow it to be a more viable threat, in narrative terms.

Okay, then. . .things that made me happy this week, whether they were important or not:

Theological discussions in Secret Six.

Table manner discussions in Secret Six.

The mere fact that Secret Six is now an ongoing series.

And my brand-new Egghead and Mr. Doll custom conversions!

Well Soneca, that's one way of looking at it. On the other hand, blow me.

"voting for McCain over the obviously superior Obama might not mean one is stupid, probably just latently racist."

So 48% of the voting public is "latently racist"? Interesting viewpoint, "David."
Here's a thought for you: every time you throw down that worn-out race card, you tell us much more about yourself than about anything else.
