A Wednesday Farrago

Today, I offer for your delectation a farrago of images of some of our local faves.

Tawky Tawny

Don't be hating on TT; his life's hard enough as it is.

My Ex-Husband, USAF Sgt. Roy HareYes, Roy, you were.

Captain Storm kicking a torpedo
Say ... do they keep changing which leg is the wooden one?

Dr. Thirteen,
karate chopping the Phantom Stranger into unconsciousness...

while the great Batman stares, utterly nonplussed
("But... but even I can't do that!")

  1. Man, Dr. Thirteen is awesome. I don't even look at the main story in "Tales of the Unexpected" anymore. I skip straight to the back.

And did Capt. Storm fight the Japanese? (I see the Imperial Sun on that torpedo). It's nice to see that some of DC's WWII guys fought in the Pacific...

  2. The Unknown Soldier was in the Pacific quite a bit - those strips are interesting in their own way, with the Japanese tending towards a certain look (thick round glasses, buck teeth) a lot more than the Germans are portrayed as in the more European books (then again, if you're up against the Haunted Tank, you're a blast-highlighted silhouette shouting "AAAAIIIIEEE!" rather than an individual with distinctive features).

But yes: If you'd told me a year ago that Brian Azarello would have come across the perfect way to use Dr. Thirteen in the DC Universe, I'd have laughed to cover my ignorance of Dr. Thirteen. Now, I'm just impressed. I hope they collect that story.

  3. Captain Storm was stationed in Hawaii.

Nurse Tauntsalot, in fact, is half Hawaii, half badger.

  4. Well, those are awesome pictures. And to be honest, haven't we ALL just wanted to give the Phantom Stranger a karate chop? I mean, he dresses so nicely, and is pretty suave and all, but really he CAN be annoying.

  5. What's funny is that I know for a fact the Roy part was true.

  6. "haven't we ALL just wanted to give the Phantom Stranger a karate chop?"

I mean, they only way that could be more hilarious would be to have had the Phantom Stranger in the middle of one his patented vague yet ominous speeches:

"Tread carefully! There are evils that lurk behind the--UGHN!"

  7. What series was Sgt. Hare from?

Hey, I figure, everyone has someone who's empty cockpit they can fill.

Not according to my ex-wife, curse her rancid soul.

  9. Ariel,

Captain Storm had backup stories that featured one-shots of various military personal.

The series that Sgt. Hare actually starred in for a while was titled, "The Losers"...

  10. Any chance Captain Storm had two wooden legs?

  11. LOL! I spit out what I was drinking from laughing so hard when I read Roy Hare's sombering assessment!

  12. "Any chance Captain Storm had two wooden legs?"

I get the strange feeling I'm being turned into a puppet...

  13. Anyone else yell "Judo Chop!" when Austin kung-fu'd the Stranger. I refrain on commenting on how a guy walks across dimensions and goes toe to toe with the Spectre can be felled by some 70's kitsch

  14. But ...
    but...

    it's Doctor Thirteen.

He is--always has been- the only person who can take on the Phantom Stranger. It's the Power of Unbelief.

Actually, it's the irony of Dr. Thirteen; he himself has the unique supernatural power to kick the Stranger's ass.

    Now you're getting deep.

  16. I, too, am officially buying Tales of the Unexpected just for the Dr. Thirteen story.

That's $3.99 for half a comic. Ridiculous? Yes. But worth it if there was some way of letting DC know that that is why I'm buying.

I so don't care about The Spectre and his needlessly graphic, Old Testament vengeance. If I wanted to read about a otherworldly sadist with a hard-on for revenge, I'd read Spawn.
