ESCAPE FROM ARKHAM

Well, I was going to post about the Shield again today.

But THIS, I believe, takes priority (at least, for some of us).

I've known this for a while, but was sworn to secrecy. Now that it's been leaked by others elsewhere, there's no real point in trying to keep quiet...

Naturally, I have a lot to say about this.

But I'd prefer to save it for your own comments...

  1. Tons of bad guys, which is great. White Martians might be the most powerful generics, or at least close to it.

Likewise, Superman Prime might be the most powerful figure you can get out of a booster. The only ones who might compare are those chase Supermen from the last set.

Highlights for me are the 3 main LOSV members, the new Jay Garrick, and Zoom.

  2. At first, I was kind of surprised by Zoom; he was in a set not that long ago. But then I remembered that he was a mailaway figure. And this one will be vicious. So very vicious.

And Jay's going to have a Defense of 20. Dreamy.

  3. Is Frankenstein the first of the Seven Soldiers to get a figure? (I really don't care about the game, but I *do* care about the 7S getting continued life in any medium...)

    ReplyDelete
  4. No, Morrison version of the Guardian was the first.

    ReplyDelete
  5. See, that's cool. What's not cool is that other guy running around in Guardian armor in the Jimmy Olson special in a few months.

  6. There was also a Bulleteer not long ago, wasn't there?

    ReplyDelete
  7. That list is way too perfect...

  8. "There was also a Bulleteer not long ago, wasn't there?"

Yes,and since Shining Knight, Klarion, and Mister Miracle have already been made, Frankenstein is the LAST of Morrison's Seven Soldiers.

  9. Oh, Joe, the list is FAR from perfect (to me).

Lashina = more wasted effort on Fourth World, which commits future slots to the rest of the Female Furies

Amon Sur = another colorless anti-Lantern, rather than the Shark or Sonar?

Ghost Fox Killer = more plastic wasted on Morrison's throwaway "team", the Great Ten

    Bizarro = again?!

Plasmus = the ONLY function this piece could EVER have in my games is to get kayoed by Vibe, because vibration is man-made

Man-bat assassins = another Morrison one-shot throwaway gets made before a host of classic characters, such as Killer Moth, or Ocean Master

Multiplex = because what everyone cries out for is "more Firestorm villains"?

Scandal Savage = yet another slicey-dicey martial artist 'kick-ass chick', individuated only by the lesbian angle

Hitman = what is this, "I Love the '90s"?

But, nitpicks aside, most of the characters are fun, and I think this set will be even more popular at my store than Secret Invasion.

  10. STILL NO OCEAN MASTER?!?!?!?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yeah, I tell you... I don't HATE Morrison's work, but I really don't care much for the Great Ten. Characters like that just seem to take up space for characters I'd much rather see in a set like this.

I mean, if the set's "Arkham Asylum," why aren't there more Arkham characters? Or have they all been done already (I'm only just *really* getting into heroclix)?

Still, Doctor Destiny and Black Manta... I'll take that.

  12. Is this some new version of Bizarro Yellow Lantern, or the classic version from DC Comics Presents #71 (a craven coward with Aquaman's powers)?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Wow. At first look this set's super Morrison heavy.

Highlights for me are Renee Montoya, Grodd, Riddler, Amanda Waller, Lashina, Hitman, Wonder Woman, Zoom, Black Manta, and Chang Tzu. I'm also excited about more Sinstro Corps, although I'd have preferred Karu-Sil over Amon Sur. Also, Black Manta (hell yeah!) but no Aquaman?

I'm sure my opinion will change as I see sculpts and dials.

Oh, and where the hell is Rick Flag?

    ReplyDelete
  14. The big question, for me, is - how are they going to attach Johnny Sorrow's mask?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Anthony, I'm betting they do it the same way they did Gentleman Ghost's hat. It'll be in his hand.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I dunno how I feel about this list. On the one hand, it'll be neat to have all those Sinestro Corps dudes (and I'd be shocked if they didn't do a Sinestro Corps War event dial). I'm also pretty happy about the Bat-Villains, the Gorrilla Grodd, the New Gods and the Legion of Super-Villians. And hey, Black Manta and no Ocean Master is better than no Black Manta and no Ocean Master.

On the other hand, four different common generics I'm realistically never gonna play outside of sealed? No Captain Cold? No Mirror Master? No Weather Wizard? Anarky? Nightshade? The Firestorm villain? Really?

Color me puzzled. And waiting on Hammer of Thor.

  17. I think you'll be surprised at the utility of the Thugs and Detectives, PJ.

  18. Maybe Multiplex and Lashina are there more for being part of the Suicide Squad, rather than as Firestorm villain/New Gods?

Figures that I have serious interest in: Amanda Waller, Scandal Savage (for my Secret Six team), Nightshade, Zoom, Johnny Sorrow, and Jay Garrick.

There are a few others I'd want to see the sculpt, powers, and keywords (kid Devil, the Bat-Villains) for before I get interested, but that might bring it up to 20 figures, total, which is a little disappointing (though easier on my wallet).

  19. "Maybe Multiplex and Lashina are there more for being part of the Suicide Squad, rather than as Firestorm villain/New Gods?"

    Good point.

  20. Classic Human Bomb or new Human Bomb? Either way, glad to have more Freedom Fighters.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The Human Bomb?!

    CURSE HIS NAME!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. A) I'm surprised the set list was leaked (intentionally or otherwise) two months out.

    B) I'm happy to see Amanda Waller de-pogified as it gives me hope for a Daughters of the Dragon duo sometime.

    C) I'm hoping this will make my extra SDCC Sinestro Corps Anti-Monitor a bit more of a hot trading commodity.

    D) I'm really not looking forward to Lukas Little's latest sculpts OR the inevitable Legion of Partially Shrunken Figures Who Look Like They're 12 Years Old. (Black Canary, Scarlet Witch, Malice, Spitfire, Lionheart, Piledriver, Agent Brand, Chamber....)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I second the question whether we get the original Human Bomb. Nothing against the new guy, but the original costume is a must have.

And I don't suppose there is any chance Calculator gets his costume is there?

    ReplyDelete
  24. "The Human Bomb?!

    CURSE HIS NAME!!"

Heh. Took me a minute to get that. Well, Doc, now, perhaps you can get your revenge via Heroclix. Or, get your hat handed to you a second time...!

I don't know for certain, but I'd be very surprised if it were the original Bomb costume. It may be heresy, but I like the new one much better. I mean, really, would you wear WHITE if your power is blowing up everything around you?

He probably has a really good dry cleaner.

  26. My thoughts --

    1. I'm guessing it is the classic Human Bomb, just so they can get closer to finishing out the classic Freedom Fighters.

    2. When I saw Multiplex, my thought was "cool, Suicide Squad gets it's own generic" rather than "bleah, a stupid Firestorm villain". I guess I'm a glass-half-full kind of guy.

    3. At the very least, Ghost Fox Killer should be an interesting dial.

    4. Well, at least Mallah & The Brain won't be so lonely with the Brotherhood Of Evil keyword.

    5. The LoSV is he unexpected high-point of the set.

    6. Nightshade is the last of the Charlton characters, right (with the obvious exception of Peter Cannon, Thunderbolt)?

    7. Hopefully they'll finally get Gorilla Grodd, Black Manta, Penguin, and Mad Hatter right.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Wonder Woman (Diana Prince)... I wonder if they mean a de-powered, kung-fu Wonder Woman... that would be neat!

    ReplyDelete
  28. No, I think it's just to clarify that it's not Hippolyta or Artemis (as some other figures have been).

    ReplyDelete
  29. "Nightshade is the last of the Charlton characters"

    OH, bite your tongue!

Nature Boy! Mr. Muscles! Son of Vulcan! E-Man! Gage & DeSoto!

Why, they should do a boxed set!

    ReplyDelete
  30. For that matter, they should do the Ditko versions of Captain Atom (both costumes). I already have them, courtesy of totaltoyz's conversions, but the rest of the world needs them, too.

  31. "Nature Boy! Mr. Muscles! Son of Vulcan! E-Man! Gage & DeSoto!"

Forgot about Son Of Vulcan. Does DC hold the rights to the other guys?
