And during roughly the same era, Kal-el would float the idea past Kara that he would eagerly marry her, if only they could find a legal loophole. Ralph's still looking pretty good.
Awwww...cut Ralph a break! He hangs out with the Flash! He has stretchy powers, which is always a cause for hilarity and derision! He has a few feelings of inadequacy...nothing wrong with that.
First Anom: To be fair, I always thought that any weird factor from Kara-Kal is rationally less about their being relatives than the fact that pre-crisis their age difference is about 15 years or so (Pre-Crisis Supes was like 30, while Kara was like 16).
In the New52, where Clark is 25 and Kara is 16-18, that would't be a problem. Lots of people marry their cousins, and its not like there are lots of kryptonians around. Well, there's the Phantom Zone but they probably have degenerate crazy people genes (Faora doesn't strike me as a good baby momma), and Kandor is a bit busy being the size of my vade mecum.
(btw always thought the idea that Lois can't have Clark's baby, but Diana can, is totes bull. Amazons are largely human, kryptonians are still aliens. At least New52 Diana is a goddess)
And it's not really nostalgia either. I liked them during the JLA Detroit era but it's only been the last 4 to 5 years that I became such a big fan.
I like Batman a lot, and a few years ago I started collecting 1960s issues of Detective. I have about 20 issues where the Dibnys are the back-up feature and they are highly entertaining, frequently much better than the "New Look" Batman stories (which isn't saying much, I admit.)
The Dibnys are a couple of WEIRDOS, but the stories are fun and the art is all guys like Infantino, Murphy Anderson and Gil Kane and there's even at least one story by Neal Adams.
"Kal-el would float the idea past Kara that he would eagerly marry her, if only they could find a legal loophole."
No loophole necessary. Marrying your first cousin is legal in 13 (I think) states, my home state of Florida being one of them. I know a couple who did it. She didn't even have to change her name.
They had a genetic assay done, to make sure there were no problems. The doctor told them that, in general, unrelated people have a 1% chance of impaired children, and first cousins have a 2% chance. Of course, the odds go up if you keep intermarrying. They had five kids.
So, anyway, the idea's not that weird if you're from the right area. I'm more skeeved by the 30-year-old/teenager thing.
Bryan L (presumably the Earth-Two counterpart of Bryan El?) - Superman's concern was that Kryptonian law didn't allow cousins to marry. Right cheer on the Absorbascon:
I'm guessing Superman combed the Kryptonian lawbooks and determined that Kryptonian law is binding not on a basis of location, but on identity: Kryptonian law applies to Kryptonians even on earth. Which wouldn't be a problem except that Batman has probably built his own phantom zone projector ...
"Kryptonian law applies to Kryptonians even on earth."
Well, that explains it. Because, after all, if they broke the law of a completely obliterated civilization, they'd have to answer to ... well, they could never show their faces in ... Kandor, I guess ...
Hoosier X ... "at least one story by Neal Adams.". Did ... did he write it, or just do the art? Because while I'm terrified of an Adams-penned Dibny story, I'm also giggling as I imagine Sue talking in his character voice. :)

ReplyDeleteHow much of the Dearborn fortune was wasted, that day, in getting people to applaud for the guy dressed like the (snicker) "honored guest"?
ReplyDeleteAwwww...cut Ralph a break! He hangs out with the Flash! He has stretchy powers, which is always a cause for hilarity and derision! He has a few feelings of inadequacy...nothing wrong with that.
ReplyDeleteDammit I love Ralph!
Oh, that's it, Sally; CLAP FOR HIM.
ReplyDeleteYou're just making it WORSE>

We should all hate Ralph because he is a flawed human.
ReplyDelete(OGOD, I love the Dibnys, despite the fact that they are a couple of FREAKS!)

What's not to love?
More Dibny weirdness!
ReplyDeleteThey really got to pop up in The Flash!

Ah, the Silver Age.
I'm surprised Superman didn't say: Look, Supergirl, it's either me or a freakin' HORSE!
