I finally remembered.
There I was, lying in bed listening to the expected hailstorm we were having here in DC.
A hailstorm; that reminded of something, some story I wanted to talk about. But I just couldn’t quite recall what it was, or where I’d seen it. So I just lay there, tossing and turning, listening to the drumbeat of the hail on the windows. Until…
It was the story of this man:
This man’s name is Grimes. I’m sure you’ve never heard of him.
Yet Grimes is symbol, an encapsulation of perfect Golden Age -style storytelling, both good and bad. His is a triumphant of concept so pure, so absolute, that in the coming week it will cleanse your mind and soul. His story will help you realize that (1) whatever you read this week wasn’t nearly as stupid as it could have been and (2) no, you would not want to be a comic book character in a comic book world.

Next week, ladies and gentleman, is Rocky Grimes Week. Yes, I have finally remembered; and I intend to make sure that none of us ever forget.
I've heard of the photographer. Must be weird to share a name with a Golden Age villain:

He keeps his jewelry in a giant pink trunk. I'm hooked already.
ReplyDeleteThat is the very definition of ominous. I can't wait.

ReplyDeleteWho DOESN'T?
Okay, I just looked up which hero fought Rocky Grimes (who appeared in a total of three stories). As much fun as I've found your earlier discussions on some of said hero's villains and as much fun as I'll no doubt find this upcoming one, I'm respectfully requesting that at some point you consider examining the golden age villains of some of DC's less prominent heroes. Everybody already knows lots of things about this particular hero's setting, supporting cast, etc. (I'm avoiding spoilers), let's hear about settings, casts, etc. that almost nobody knows anything about any more. FWIW. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteLike... the Shield?
ReplyDeleteNo. Not like the Shield. More like...Starman. Wildcat. Hourman. Doctor Mid-Nite. Mister Terrific. Al Pratt. Wesley Dodds. Alan Scott. Jay Garrick. Robert Crane. The Crimson Avenger. The Shining Knight. The Star-Spangled Kid. Johnny Quick. Liberty Belle. Uncle Sam. The Ray. Firebrand. And so on. And so on. And so on.
ReplyDeleteStarman? Really? As if I haven't written about Starman?
ReplyDeleteI pretty much write about what amuses ME, Ronald.
ReplyDeleteAnd then I hope it amuses others, too. It's worked for me so far, so I think I'll stick with it.
Perhaps Ronald could write about the stuff that he wants, on HIS blog. That is what they are for.
ReplyDeleteThey're fun that way.
I think Ronald has a future as a DC editor.
ReplyDeleteLike I said, it was JUST a SUGGESTION. I'll remember not to make any more of those in the future. Not a problem. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteDifferent Anonymous here ... I get ronald's suggestion, and wouldn't mind hearing about more heroes; but I'm not minding the focus on villains either. Really, Scipio may talk about anything that pleases him and I'm likely to enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteHey Scipio ... hope this isn't too nosy, but I've always hoped you would get another dog, and maybe tell us about him or her. Only if you feel like sharing, of course.
