I've heard with interest and agreement many of your criticisms of the new Justice League #1: that the principals behave too poorly, that the story is badly decompressed, that the use of Darkseid betrays DC's professed fresh start, that it's too much like Marvel, etc.
I hear ya.
But, honestly, even with all that and worse, I will still continue to buy this comic every month just as long as I get to see...
SOMEONE BEATING THE CRAP OUT OF HAL JORDAN EVERY MONTH.
Cuz that's just something I can't get from Marvel, you know...?
You mean, the Sub-Mariner beating up Doctor Spectrum just doesn't do it for you?
ReplyDeleteI don't understand the gripes about Darkseid. No reason he can't be rebooted along with the rest of the gang.
You're...mocking me, aren't you?
ReplyDeleteStill, I can certainly understand the appeal. Hal's thick mane of hair just CRIES OUT to be whacked.
If DC wants somebody beating up on Hal Jordan, they should pick a character who can plausibly affect GL in some way.
ReplyDeleteHaving a normal human do the ridiculous is just fanboy masterbation. NO WAY Batman takes Hal's ring off--unless the writer simply violates every rule of logic and common sense when typing it out. Which is what JL#1 is...
...another example of DC overwriting a weak character because it is popular. Marvel does the same thing with Wolverine. It only makes the story stupid and the characters utterly unbelievable.
Batman might be in the Justice League with Hal, but he is not IN THE SAME LEAGUE as Hal. Hal is lightyears beyond a pouty little rich kid with expensive toys.
Batman outside of Gotham is a joke. Batman being able to affect Hal in any way is a joke. Justice League #1 is a joke. 'Nuff said.
That is one way of looking at it, yes, and it's not entirely invalid.
ReplyDeleteHowever, from my reading of the last 70 years of comics, Occum's Razor suggests that a simpler and more consistent interpretation is that Hal is "a joke".
And that's not entirely his fault; given the potential power of the ring as currently interpreted, he almost has to be to make the character work.
Dunno...still love the line from the Big Bang Theory: "Awwww....Aquaman sucks..." (at least if he's riding a pink seahorse)
