Things That Made Me Happy

in my comics this week.

  • Rioting, looting, fires burning unchecked, daring breakouts, National Guard enforcing curfews. Ah, Gotham. It's a helluva town.
  • And Diamondrock's right. It is so so so very wrong that her eyes are blue.
  • Even the Phantom Stranger's poppet does whatever it wants.
  • "Belay that talk, Amazon."
  • Wow, Superman was beautiful this month; you go, Guedes, Magalhase, and Curiel!
  • Ollie's idea of kinky sexy play.
  • Jim's nic fit.
  • "I'll have you know Gazerbeam and I once fought Mr. Bossy-pants."
  • Thank god Bibbo's not being portrayed as a congenital idiot any more.
  • Achilles?! Well... that's an interesting choice.
  • Oh, yeah; that's Jim Corrigan, the ass-kicking tough guy cop! Who sews.
  • That's the last hero I would have expected to go after a piece of tail!
  • Fire and ice.
  • "Well, hmm. I'm out." ROTFL!
  • The Mon-El watch.
  • Tong. So good to see Tong again, even if only in passing.
  • "He was a kind man." Yes. Thanks for remembering that.
  • How Amazons cover their nakedness.
  • Oh, nice gambit to make me like Halo. It's not working yet, but it's a nice try.
  • Well, if anyone would know about deserving to be hit repeatedly, it would be Hal.
  • Nice interpet on Mr. Freeze.
  • "You want a side of eggs with that ham?"
  • One of my favorite villains made Spider-Man punch himself in the face. BWAHAHAAHA!
  • Whoa. Do not &#$(@ with Commissioner Gordon.
  • Whoa. Do not make Wonder Woman do something she'll regret.
  • Whoa. That's ... Wendy's dad? Whoa. Whoa. Didn't see that coming.
  • Huh. The "anti-Luthor". Elegant; simple; a good role for him in a needed niche. I approve.
  • I guess I should have known Zatara was from Italy. But it never occurred to me.
  • What terrifies Phobia.
  • Gorbul Mammit; now that is a Flash fact!
  • Is it my imagination or is the deco architecture of Metropolis vaguely reminiscent of the crystalline structures of Krypton?
  • Now that is decapitation with drama! Thanks, Kevin Vanhook!
  • You know, if he had hit her, so-called feminists would be up in arms about it. Whose double-standard is it...?
  • "Foolish ornament"? Ouch, that hurts!
  • Is the Phantom Stranger wearing a sweater-vest? Just never know what he'll do.
  • Okay, I've always hated her. But now she's dissing Detroit. This means war.
  • John Kent's new job.
  • Homoerotic tension humor!
  • Zolpidem? Wow, they are desperate.
  • Ooo, I didn't think Genocide would go there. She really does know how to cut deep. But my money's still on Etta.
  • Do yourself a favor; don't miss the debut of the Incredibles comic this week. It made me happy.
  • So, even McDuffie knows his run hasn't accomplished anything? Brilliantly self-aware redux, part of his ingenious grand plan, or just unintentional irony?

  1. Oops; just a type; I must have thought Bibbo was an ex-con.

  3. "Wendy's dad?" Two questions. Is this the Wendy of "Marvin and", and whose dad is she? (I know who they said her dad was back in the old Super Friends comic....)

I'm pretty sure that Wendy isn't anybody's dad. But yes, it is the Wendy of "Marvin and." Marvin got eaten by a dog.

And there are many things that I don't know anything about, Scipio. I'm proud to say that the Japanese aren't one of the things I know nothing about. Still, you'd think that eye color thing would be obvious, wouldn't you?

  5. Superman speech to Mon-El in this week's Superman was just...weird. I mean, as written, it just came across as very un-Supermanish.

And when Bibbo first appeared, all those years ago, was it just my teenaged hormone addled looking for gay representation in any context mind at work or was he originally meant to be coming on to Superman in a rought trade dock worker kind of way?

  6. Haven't made it to the shop yet, but now I've got to make sure I find my Phantom Stranger fix.

OK, you got me on a typo. But who is her dad? The same guy they said it was in the 70s Super Friends comic?

  8. Never mind, I just looked it up on Wikipedia. Not the same guy at all. Uh-uh.

  9. Good God, I missed a Fire and Ice appearance? I must be slipping.

I just wanted to SLAP Vixen.

And apparently Ollie and Dinah's love life is even stranger than I thought.

  10. I could have sworn the Wendy reveal already happened in an earlier issue/title. Perhaps even Teen Titans itself?

And if he's (another) cousin, why couldn't they have gone with "Bob Cobb"? Not minding too much though - just hoping they don't mess with my first comic book crush like they did with that awful "Valor" series.

  11. Sorry TotalToyz, I didn't want to put the answer here in the comments in case there are those who fear the terrible wrath of spoilers...

And yeah, Hal. It was briefly revealed in an early comic. I think it was Teen Titans or maybe Birds of Prey. I can't really recall.

  12. I understand, Rocky. Would it be "spoiling" things to say that, in the 70s Super Friends comic, the "Wonder Twins"' relationship to the super-heroes was explained as Wendy being the daughter of Harvey Harris, the detective who taught the young Bruce Wayne everything he knew, and Marvin being the son of the "real" Diana Prince and her husband Jim White?

  13. "I missed a Fire and Ice appearance?"

You didn't, dearie; it's only fire and ice, not Fire and Ice!

"I just wanted to SLAP Vixen. "

Indeed. And why writers keep writing her like an American black, when she's very much from African, I cannot understand.

  14. Every week I read these and wish I could buy every comic that came out.

Wow, I was actually going to ask you how that was worked out. Thanks for the info.

And no, I think after 20-30 years it no longer counts as spoiling...

  16. Great list, I think that was indeed McDuffie being metatextual or whatever.

Did they reference Wendy's Super-Friends dad in that old story that ahd someone killing the people who trained Bruce Wayne? Was that the Many Deaths of Batman story by John Byrne and Jim Aparo?

I loved this week's Superman too (I blogged at tedious length), the art, especially, was phenomenal.

  17. I think Harvey Harris appeared in one story post-Crisis, but it wasn't that Many Deaths thing. I think it was an Annual done very shortly after Crisis. Wasn't a good story, as I recall.

If they were gonna go with someone besides Harvey Harris, why couldn't it have beenone of Rex (Hourman) Tyler's in-laws named for their Aunt Wendi?
