Master of... what was that again...?

Just a brief note, which should be of particular interest to certain supervillains who like to imagine themselves to be bloggers...

I've been playing a solitaire game of Heroclix that honors the first issue of the new Doom Patrol series, with my DP-themed team of 750 points against a team of villains associated with Oolong Island. I'm playing on my Big Monkey Store Map, which naturally breaks the action up into different theaters of war.

While the Doom Patrol has been busy fighting Giganta, Dr. Domino, and Angle Man, (and getting nowhere),

the Metal Men (who are the, ahem, 'co-feature' in the back of Doom Patrol) successfully took out Egg Fu (that's Chang Tzu to you kiddies) and then...

wait for it...

they kicked Dr. Polaris's patootie.

Yes, you heard right. Dr. Polaris, the *snicker* "master of magnetism", was handed his funny-looking hat by ... the Metal Men.

OH, the comic book irony.

AND, Iron wasn't even helping out. He was elsewhere, casually holding his own against BIZARRO.

Sure, the Metal Men had a little help from Beast Boy, but, you know, how much of a difference is that? The Metal Men pwned DOCTOR POLARIS with one metal tied behind their backs.

Metal Men rocked, and Dr. Polaris rolled. *Snort*!

  1. Is the Metal Men co-feature any good? They're a favorite of mine (I like how they're being written in Wednesday Comics), but I haven't had a chance to pick up DP yet and wondered if it was worth it.

  2. Well, I certainly liked it.

Would you mind sharing the tactics which allowed the Metal Men to best Dr. Polaris, please? I'm rather curious. You don't recall your Heroclix matches to us often, but I've always found them particularly interesting and amusing.

  4. Polaris's abilities work best at range. So Mercury and Gold based him to keep him occupied, while Lead & Tin outwitted his Deflection against ranged attack, and walloped him from afar. Doc Magnus was able to increase the Metal Men's effectiveness from afar by using his "Roboticist" special power (increasing their combat values as a group).

You have conversions of Dr. Domino and Angle Man? Grrrr. . . .

  6. This makes me unnaturally happy.

Does Mercury get a bonus for going on and on about how he's the only metal liquid at room temperature?

  7. To be fair to Doctor Polaris, of the Metal Men only Iron is a ferromagnetic element. The others are at best paramagnetic, and Lead and (IIRC) Mercury are both diamagnetic. Despite their name and goofy comic book tropes about magnetism, the team's actually fairly hard to manipulate megnetically.

  8. I do love the contrast between Marvel's Magneto and DC's Dr. Polaris, how one's a class A threat and the other's strictly C-class.

If it wasn't for C-class, Dr. Polaris wouldn't have no class at all.

  10. "You have conversions of Dr. Domino and Angle Man? "
    Yes. I do. :)

"Does Mercury get a bonus for going on and on about how he's the only metal liquid at room temperature?"
Actually, one of his powers is named "Did you know that mercury is the only metal that's liquid at room temperature?" Really.

"only Iron is a ferromagnetic element."
C-class villains/heroes in the DCU are A-class in the Marvel World.

"only Iron is a ferromagnetic element."
That's why I kept him in a separate room, away from Dr. Polaris.

  11. This MUST have been the new "faux" Doctor Polaris. Because quite frankly, the man is a wuss.

I prefer classic Doctor Polaris any day.

    Thanks, Scipio!

And "C-class villains/heroes in the DCU are A-class in the Marvel World."? Beautiful- I couldn't have quipped it better myself.

    Yes. I do. :)

And also one of Dr. Polaris, which I think looks a lot cooler than the one WizKids made; but then, I'm a little biased.

Angle Man actually is on one of many "to do" lists for conversions, with a dial identified for him, but there are about 80 Golden Age characters coming first.

And I never thought about Dr. Domino before, but now that you mention it. . . .

  15. I put Dr. Domino on a Doctor Doom base, which works quite well (Mastermind, Perplex, Energy Explosion...).

All that, and one of the greatest costumes in the annals of super-villainy. Really makes you wonder why WizKids never did a version.

Did Clock King and Dr. Domino ever team up? That's a deadly duo I'd like to see in action together.

  18. Here's a pic of Dr. Domino and the Dominominions (sounds like a 70s Motown group, donnit?) I did for Scipio:

Clock King and Dr. Domino? Sounds like a natural! Throw in Black Manta and The Key and call them the Head Quarters!

    Very cool!

About those Head Quarters, though. . .you know this would mean war with the Headsmen of Earth-616!

  20. I'm surprised Dr. Polaris hasn't come by to defend himself yet.

I guess I'll do it for him. He, uh, had a cold. Head cold, nasty stuff. Also, what game were the refs watching?
