Things That Made Me Happy...

in my comics this week.

  • That in Metropolis guards discuss existentialism.
  • Leland McCauley? Really? That's... very strange. But just a coincidence, I'm sure.
  • Batman teams up with the Haunted Tank.
  • Hal Jordan, disarmed.
  • That Vixen, Firestorm, and Green Lantern were the ones to confront Hardware.
  • "Seems like twenty years ago but it really wasn't." Heh.
  • I have a feeling we should recognize some of those people at the party, looking at us. Do you?
  • The truth about Tom.
  • Sinestro, on love.
  • The Shield, and Static, on the big screens.
  • Thank you for remembering what Vicki Vale originally was: a photojournalist who suspected Batman's secret identity. And a scantily-clad sexpot.
  • Kung pow!
  • The Queen of Fables' favorite drink.
  • "Luciphage". Nice.
  • I trust you, Todd!
  • The Shield still lives in D.C.
  • Why Mon-El's powers keep winking out, which is perfectly consistent with why Superman was never able to cure lead poisoning.
  • Leslie's bodyguard.
  • Now, there's the missing member of the original Justice Society!
  • Batman, on book burning.
  • Yes, Courtney; Albert is dense. How could you not have noticed?

  1. Gah! I had better run to the store and get my books!

  2. "Leland McCauley? Really? That's... very strange. But just a coincidence, I'm sure."I thought so, too, during the Azrael mini.

Could just be a distant ancestor...

Where did the Shield show up?

Thanks, Scipio. I didn't realize DC was going to debut the Shield before the Red Circle series.

    ¿Hal Jordan, disarmed?

    Hilarious, man, hilarious...

  6. Kung? Kung? I know Ordway can't do anything about a character made in the 1970's, but "Kung" isn't a Japanese name. You can't even say "Kung" in Japanese.

    *sigh*

Other than that, a pretty good week!

  7. I missed the book with the "lucifage" thing. What is that, exactly? A creature that eats fallen angels?

In a similar theme, verification word: haysum. Some kind of agricultural math term?

  8. JLA.

    "Luciphage" means 'light-eater".

  9. Yes, I read that issue. Shadow Thief referred to Starbreaker thusly.

I don't understand how Dwayne McDuffie, who consistently wrote such great JLA cartoons, can consistently write such bad JLA comic books. Sure, I enjoyed some of the one-liners; but if I wanted to watch Friends I would. I want to read the Justice League, and this isn't even close.

  10. Oh Hal. Why do these sorts of things keep happening to you?

On the other hand, it WAS awfully nice to have Todd around, although we didn't really get to "see" him. I love Ted, but really, you and Alan need to have a little faith there. And yes, Albert IS dense.

Todd in Justice Society, and Todd in Manhunter, seem to be two different people. Very inconsistent characterization between the two titles.

  12. Could DC be laying some groundwork between the shadow-zone of JLA, the Obsidian-observed ghost-zone of JSA and the coming Blackest Night?

Plus the "closing" of the Phantom Zone in Superman?

What's it mean? An anti-"bleed" idea?

  13. I know! I know! Leland McCauley is really Vandal Savage, so of course he couldn't really die from a bullet to the head, and shows up as a future version of himself in the 30th century. Or, wait! wait! Dead 20th century Leland becomes a Black Lantern and is shoved into a pocket universe and whisked to the 30th century by the Time Trapper and. . . .

  14. The Shield also appeared in "Green Arrow" / "Black Canary". (Uh, was that this week or last? Either way, it was this week for me.)

  15. The Shield was also shown on a monitor in the background in yet another book this week. Let's see ... oh, here it is - Superman 688. Along with the rest of the Red Circle guys and the Milesone folk. It's a full court press on integrating these characters, it seems.

  16. To be fair to Di, I wouldn't mind Tom being my racehorse either.

  17. Here, I do not actually think this is likely to have success.
