Things That Made Me Happy...

in my comics this week.

  • Flying penguin missiles. Really, if you aren't reading Blue Beetle, you deserve to. It's not only a great read, the art's beautiful.
  • Alan Scott versus Grandfather Clock.
  • Guy Gardner versus the Ultra-Humanite.
  • Firestorm's ingenious defeat of Kalibak and then the Parademons. I wish more of you had read Firestorm!
  • Mr. Mind's makeover.
  • Finding out the answer to "52 what?" And the answer! bring them on!
  • Oh, by the way-- I TOLD YOU SO; Skeets is innocent. Or was, I guess.
  • Well! Hippolyta sure wakes up crabby, doesn't she?
  • Robin's ongoing man-crush on Superbo-- Kon-El, the Hero Whose Named Must Not Be Spoken.
  • Hal Jordan's brilliant tactics in Justice. Yeah, you heard me.
  • Batman & Friends fighting "the nightmares of the Arkhamites".
  • The Rolling Head of Abraham Lincoln!
  • The EXTREMELY interesting set of statues in the Fortress of Solitude (including the fabulous Sensor Girl) and Superman's speech explaining them.
  • Wait, wait ... did he just throw up Batman's utility belt...?!
  • I really can't imagine Wonder Woman calling anyone "Mom"; but it did make me laugh!
  • At least Geoff Johns knows how to write Geo-Force as the pompous undeserving jackass he is.
  • The Rolling Head of Detective Lenahan! Really, why aren't more of you reading Catwoman?
  • Well, based on Black Lightning's comments to the president (and some other info), I guess the Hall of Justice is on the site where (here on "our earth") sits the Holocaust Museum. Not exactly, where I would have picture it, but at least its in DC where it belongs.

  1. Blue Beetle and Catwoman are fantastic reads, probably the two most consistantly good (and shipped) DC titles OYL.

  2. I am reading Catwoman! Which is surprising considering how much I dislike Batman and his clan. Will Pfeifer brings the goodness every month.

  3. So, so many things made me happy this week. The explanation of the Dominators' "fifdee-too." The explanation of the statues in the Fortress. The picture of the statues in the fortress [but where's Quislet? Maybe a skeets connection there...]. What flight rings are made out of. What the Emerald Eye is. The Wonder Woman/ Black Canary/ JLA answer. The fact that Dream Girl's and Sandy's/ Sandman's prophetic dreams are linked through the Dreaming.

And, hell yeah, the nightmares of the inmates at Arkham, and Mr. Mind's makeover.

How can last week have been so disappointing and this week so satifying?

  4. I've never followed Booster Gold's adventures; was it ever explained how a Legion flight ring from the 30th Century ended up in 25th Century museum?

  5. Yes. Legionnaires came to town to prevent an assassination attempt on Prez Reagan - or something. They left some Legion artifacts behind as gifts.

  6. I am finally beginning to understand why Alex Ross is such a drooling fool for a certain Green Lantern...

  7. The Legion went back to the 20th c to investigate how Booster had a flight ring and a force field belt. They helped him foil the assassination attempt, then Brainy decided to close the causality loop by leaving the artifacts behind in the 20th c so they could make their way into the museum by the 25th.

  8. No panel in recent comics has given me as much joy as Mama Reyes not having any from some candy-ass Green Lantern.

  9. The thing that made me most happy : The 31st century got Boostered.

  10. Gosharootie, it was a wonderful week. Jaime's mom is amazing. Wonder Woman's mom is also amazing, but in a completely different way. Talk about cranky!

And John Stewart even showed up and saved the day in Justice! Woohoo!

Oh, the old go-back-in-time-to-investigate-a-mystery-and-end-up-causing-it trick! Cheese and rice, has that one ever got a long white beard!!

  12. What, no love for Ellen Baker, clear voice of reason and logical thinking, coming to the inescapable, nay, inexorable conclusion she did, in re: Starfire?

The line between Tamaranian Warrior Princess and Fake-Baked Siliconical Strip-O-Gram was never posited so pithily.

Next to Blue Beetle (nothing beats that book for sheer joy, which surprises the hell out of me), favorite moment of the week.

  13. I don't read every DC comic every week, just most - your comments each week are interesting, but I don't suppose when you do a "Things that make me happy" post you could put in cites to the issues, so I can be sure and get them?

Well, no one ever accused Dan Jurgens of being a writer of startling originality.

  15. goes to show that the driving-sales books are rarely the best. in addition to blue beetle (my favorite solo book), catwoman (my favorite two-lead book - though i would really like to see the violence against women toned down a tad to the more mundane saving-hookers-from-beatdowns for a while, especially while holly is getting her footing behind the mask), i would argue that few team books in recent memory have been as fun bill willingham's shadowpact.

  17. Missing statues in the Fortress=Quislet, Tellos, Magnetic Kid and (I believe, I don't have the issue in front of me at the moment) Tyroc. The odd thing is that Jeckie is there as Sensor Girl and Polar Boy is there at all. Makes me wonder exactly when Superb--er, man left the Legion. (At the time of "the first crisis," those two weren't members, were they?)

And a "I really enjoy it too" from me for Blue Beetle. :-)
