Safe and Unsafe States

 States That Have Superhero Cities

Here's a game for fun. Can you guess which cities I based this map on?

Disclaimer: locating where cities are in the DCU is, at best, an inexact science.

  1. I wonder if you're going with Smallville MD like used to be a thing (I think). Honestly it makes more sense than Kansas, since Metropolis is immovably on the Atlantic seaboard and Smallville is at least sometimes depicted as closer to Metropolis than to any other large city.

You've got Kansas and Missouri to cover Central City and Keystone City, stand-ins for the Kansas Cities. Though my headcanon is still that Central City is Detroit Michigan and Keystone City is Windsor Ontario. Yes, that would make Jay a Canadian, which just about makes sense since he's basically wearing a Mountie's serge. Would also explain why two speedsters in bordering cities generally don't have overlapping adventures when their defining trait is not being geographically limited.

Clark and Bruce are in New Jersey; Hal's in California; Ollie's in either Seattle or Star City but they're both in Washington. John could be in Denver CO or Apex City FL, depending. Wonder Woman would probably be in DC.

Doctor Fate is in Salem MA. Impulse and Max Mercury were in Alabama, though that was like 30 years ago in better times.

Over at Marvel, Rocket Racer is based in NYC.

  2. Heh no Maryland is there as the putative location of Opal City ( Robinson is reputed to have based it on Baltimore)

  3. Okay, I'll take a shot without trying to repeat anyone else's. Texas is home to El Paso, Jaime Reyes' hometown. But he's been relocated to Palmira City, which is Miami. Maine I think includes Amnesty Bay and possibly Happy Harbor, but I think Happy Harbor should be in Massachusetts. Louisiana has Swamp Thing's little town Marais plus Belle Reve Prison. Damage is from Atlanta. Firestorm is PIttsburgh but Jason Rusch was Detroit. Fawcett City was traditionally located in Wisconsin, I think. California was home to Sub Diego, obviously. Will Payton was in Colorado, I think, but I don't remember a specific city name. I think Midvale belongs in Nebraska but it's supposedly close to Metropolis like Smallville. I think Midway should be in Michigan but St. Roch is in Louisiana. I'm running out of guesses.

    1. Nice input; I didn't know that about Palmira City! Happy Harbor is in Rhode Island; Fawcett City is why I included Wisconsin; Will Payton lived in Arizona; I included Georgia because of Black Lightning's Freeland (but there might be others).

  4. Wasn't Wonder Woman out of Gateway City, a stand-in for San Francisco that I first remember (casual reader) from John Byrne's run....

    1. For a while, yes. California was included for Green Lantern's Coast City, at least!

  6. Peter David's Supergirl run, the "Earth Angel" run, was in a town called Leesburg, that I think was in South Carolina.

The El Diablo that was a city councilman lived in a border town in Texas called Dos Rios.

  7. Current timeline only? Because I think the Wyoming Kid was sherriff of a city in Wyoming. (Although DC wikis say he spent time in Texas.)

  8. Let’s see… Superboy was in Hawaii, I think Honolulu? Never read that run, heard it was good…

The Question operated out of Hib City in the O’Neil/Cowan series. I thought that was a stand-in for Detroit. Since Michigan is only designated as a real world city- JL Detroit, maybe?- Hub City could be in my home state of MA, as a fictional stand-in for Boston (“hub of the universe”)? I’m blanking on another MA fictopolis, although I think Wonder Woman had a stint in Boston or a Boston fictopolis, maybe in the Byrne run? Maybe that’s Gateway City? Never read that run.

Being a weird city, I think Aztec’s Vanity City is supposed to be Portland, OR.

IIRC, Blue Valley, original home of Kid Flash, was in Nebraska.

Hawkman & Hawkwoman were in Midway City, which I think was supposed to be Chicago. They also operated out of Chicago itself in the Hawkworld ongoing. Ooh, maybe Hub City was also Chicago! I know Hawkman moved to another fictopolis in LA in th ‘00s, can’t remember the name of the city.

I know Swamp Thing was based in Louisiana, too, but I don’t remember the name of the city or town nearest to his swamp.
